What is Psychosexual Therapy?
Psychosexual Therapy is a specialist form of therapy that focuses on sexual wellbeing, intimacy, relationships and sexual functioning.
Sexual difficulties are often influenced by a combination of emotional, relational, physical and psychological factors. Many people experience feelings of shame, anxiety, frustration or isolation when sexual concerns arise, particularly when they begin to affect confidence, relationships or quality of life.
Psychosexual Therapy can help individuals and couples understand these difficulties, reduce shame and develop a healthier and more fulfilling relationship with themselves and others.

EMDR and Sexual Trauma
For some clients, unresolved traumatic experiences continue to affect intimacy, relationships and sexual wellbeing long after the original events have occurred. Experiences such as childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, coercive control, relationship betrayal and other forms of interpersonal trauma can leave lasting emotional, psychological and physiological effects.
Trauma can influence how safe we feel in our bodies, how we experience intimacy, our ability to trust others and the beliefs we hold about ourselves. Many survivors find themselves struggling with sexual shame, low self-worth, difficulties with desire, problems with arousal, emotional disconnection, anxiety during intimacy or a sense of feeling detached from their bodies. These responses are often understandable adaptations to overwhelming experiences rather than signs that something is "wrong".
At Sensate Therapy, we recognise that sexual difficulties do not always arise from sexual dysfunction alone. In many cases, they are closely linked to unresolved trauma, attachment wounds and nervous system responses that continue to affect the present.
Where appropriate, EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) may be integrated into treatment to help process traumatic memories and reduce their ongoing impact. EMDR is an evidence-based trauma therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences so that they become less emotionally overwhelming and less disruptive to everyday life.
EMDR can be particularly beneficial for clients affected by:
Sexual trauma
Childhood sexual abuse
Domestic violence and abuse
Coercive control
Complex trauma and PTSD
Relationship trauma
Betrayal trauma following infidelity
Attachment trauma
Negative self-beliefs and chronic shame
Anxiety and fear associated with intimacy and relationships
Many clients seek support because they understand that their past experiences continue to affect their present relationships, sexuality and sense of self. By combining Psychosexual Therapy with EMDR and trauma-informed practice, we can help clients process traumatic experiences while also addressing the impact these experiences may have on intimacy, relationships, sexual confidence and emotional wellbeing.
Our aim is not simply to reduce symptoms but to support clients in rebuilding a sense of safety, connection and self-compassion, allowing them to develop healthier relationships with themselves and others.

Trauma, intimacy and sexual wellbeing.
Many sexual difficulties are influenced by earlier experiences, including childhood trauma, sexual trauma, attachment difficulties, domestic abuse, coercive control or previous relationship experiences.
Trauma can affect how safe we feel in our bodies, how we experience intimacy, how we relate to others and how we view ourselves. It can contribute to difficulties with desire, arousal, trust, sexual confidence and emotional connection.
At Sensate Therapy, we take a trauma-informed approach to Psychosexual Therapy, recognising that sexual difficulties are often understandable responses to difficult experiences rather than personal failings.
Sex therapy for couples.
Sexual difficulties can place significant strain on relationships. Couples often seek support when differences in desire, intimacy difficulties, communication problems or the impact of life stressors begin to affect their connection.
Psychosexual Therapy can help couples:
Improve communication about sex and intimacy
Understand desire differences
Rebuild emotional and physical connection
Recover after infidelity or betrayal
Develop greater sexual confidence
Address long-standing sexual difficulties
Strengthen intimacy and relationship satisfaction
Our approach is collaborative and non-judgemental, creating a space where both partners can feel heard and understood.
Sex therapy for individuals.
You do not need to be in a relationship to benefit from Sex Therapy or Psychosexual Therapy.
Many individuals seek therapy to better understand their relationship with sex, intimacy, desire, confidence and emotional wellbeing. Sexual difficulties can affect self-esteem, identity, relationships and quality of life, regardless of whether you currently have a partner.
Individual Sex Therapy can help with:
Sexual shame and negative self-beliefs
Body image concerns
Compulsive Sexual Behaviour
Pornography addiction concerns
Recovery from sexual trauma
Childhood sexual abuse and its impact on intimacy
Difficulties forming or maintaining intimate relationships
Many people find it difficult to discuss sexual concerns due to feelings of embarrassment, shame or fear of judgement. Therapy provides a confidential and supportive space to explore these experiences, understand contributing factors and develop greater confidence, self-acceptance and sexual wellbeing.
Our therapists work collaboratively with you to understand not only the difficulties you are experiencing but also the emotional, relational and psychological factors that may be contributing to them.
Our approach.
Our therapists integrate Psychosexual Therapy, Relationship Therapy, Trauma Therapy and EMDR to provide holistic and personalised support.
We understand that sexual wellbeing cannot be separated from emotional wellbeing, relationships, attachment experiences and life history. Therapy focuses not only on symptoms but on understanding the wider context of your experiences and supporting meaningful, sustainable change.
We work with individuals and couples of all backgrounds and relationship structures, offering an inclusive and affirming therapeutic environment.
